xx New record set in New South Wales Billiards Championship | 27 Jun 09
11:05:42 by Redphex | Views: 29 | Comments: 0

Having enjoyed and gained match play experience in the Championships and the ABC Worthing's five time West Sussex championship Richard Sandell was compelled due to business commitments to transfer to Sydney in March last year, but wasted no time in joining the famous City Tattersells club and within ten days was playing both billiards and snooker in the well organised leagues.

In March this year he competed in the centenary tournament of the NSW minors championship an event in which previous champions are excluded. He was delighted to reach the final and defeat Central Coast's Adam Fitzgerald 610-735 collecting a trophy previously won by Eddie Charlton in 1950 and $A250.
Now entitled to enter the open he went on to win the New South Wales Major title at this his first attempt and thus set the record being the only player in the Leagues 110 year history to win both titles  in the same year. He added another $A 500 to his winnings.

Richard was proud to record a win in the semi final 677-414 over the highly rated Joe Minici whilst his opponent in the final  International Todd Hayward who had recorded a break of 209 beat Michael Pearson 575 - 460

The final was an entertaining one with Todd recording breaks of 105 and 90 Richards consistent scoring helped by breaks of 84 and 81 saw him home the winner 868-700

Six finals appearances out of seven events in the last one-and-a-half-years is a testimony to the 36-year-old cueist’s growing consistency ...
